Photos of William and Clara and Hapgood family at Kin Kin

William Hapgood and his wife Clara Rose (nee Newton) were my great grandparents and they had the house at Kin Kin which he helped build. It was part of a file of Hapgood related family history papers. I have seen this photo before but only as a photocopy that my mother sent to me once. Her system of taking photocopies of sheets of photos and then annotating them is turning out to be very useful. Her annotated version is at the base of this post, but this photo is from 1947 and shows William and Clara Hapgood, with their daughter Clarice Phyllis (seated on the right), her husband Arthur Johnston, and the three Johnston girls – Clare, Beryl and Pam. Stella Hapgood is seated in the middle. Its a lovely clear photo – I particuarly love Stella’s “Victory roll” hairstyle. Phyllis is also looking quite stylish.

There were a couple of other related photos – this one of Clara and William Hapgood, a bit older, sitting in front of a shed and a post and rail fence, with William carrying his walking stick. Clara appears to have a matching dress and coat. They look sad in this photo.

The next photo is quite poignant. My mother has annotated a copy of this photo as “The day they left Kin Kin”. I have also heard my father talk about this photo – it clearly was a significant event for the family. There is no date in the annotation, although my sense is that anyone of the Hapgoods from Kin Kin would be able to rattle off the date instantly, as easily as they recalled birthdays, anniversaries and deaths.

Finally we gave a photo of Clara and William with their daughters Iris (left) and Phyllis (middle). Its not clear when this photo was taken – I have assumed about 1960 from the ages of William and Clara and their daughters.
